Who can become a guardian?

In Ohio, a person can become a guardian if they are an adult, are qualified to make decisions, and are willing to take responsibility for the welfare of a minor child or adult with disabilities. The court makes a determination that the person is suitable to become a guardian and is also capable of performing the duties of guardianship. In addition, the court must also be sure that the guardian can act in the best interest of the ward (the person who is being taken care of). To be appointed as a guardian, a person must show that they have the necessary skills and qualifications. For example, they should have experience dealing with people that have special needs, have emotional stability, maturity, and knowledge of the law. The court may also require the guardian to complete a criminal and civil background check. The court also looks into the potential guardian’s financial stability and ability to care for the ward. A guardian must demonstrate financial responsibility and provide information about their net worth. The court also considers the guardian’s relationship with the ward — are they related or have prior contact with the ward? Finally, the court evaluates the guardian’s willingness to support the ward. The guardian must agree to provide the ward with all the necessary care and support, which may include medical, educational, vocational, or financial assistance. The guardian must also fulfill any other duties specified by the court.
