What are the legal requirements for health insurance?
In Washington, health insurance is regulated by the Washington State Health Care Authority. Under state law, all Washington residents are required to have health insurance. The requirements are similar to those found in the Affordable Care Act, which is a federal law. In Washington, you must have a health plan that offers essential health benefits including preventive care, emergency services, hospitalization, laboratory services, mental health and substance abuse services, and prescription drugs. If you have employer-based coverage, it must meet the minimum requirements set forth by the state. You must also have coverage for certain categories of people, including those with pre-existing conditions, those under the age of 19, certain pregnant women, and those who are medically necessary. Additionally, the state requires that insurance policies cover certain preventive services at no additional cost. These services include cancer screenings, vaccinations, cholesterol screenings, smoking cessation, and obesity screenings. In Washington, there are a number of ways to get health insurance, including through the Washington Healthplanfinder, Medicaid, and Washington Apple Health. You may also be eligible for subsidies and tax credits to help lower the cost of your coverage.
