What are the legal requirements for accreditation of health care facilities?
In Washington, health care facilities are required to meet certain legal requirements in order to receive accreditation. In order to receive accreditation, all health care facilities must be in compliance with the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). The HFAP is the only nationally recognized accrediting organization in the United States and is recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The HFAP requires that health care facilities must meet certain standards in order to receive accreditation. These standards include the safety of care, the quality of care, staffing requirements, proper medical coding, and other aspects of health care delivery. In addition to these standards, all health care facilities must also implement a quality improvement process and provide adequate education for staff in order to maintain accreditation. In order to ensure that all requirements are met, health care facilities are required to undergo an initial and yearly on-site survey from the HFAP. The purpose of the on-site survey is to assess the facility’s compliance with accreditation standards. If the facility is found to be out of compliance, it may be issued a corrective action plan with a time frame in which to make the necessary changes. Accreditation is an important requirement for all health care facilities in Washington and is necessary in order to maintain their status as a licensed health care provider. Accreditation ensures that the facility meets the highest standards of safety and quality, which are required to provide the best possible care to patients.
