What is the legal framework for medical tourism?
Medical tourism is a term used for when people travel abroad to receive medical care. South Carolina, like many other states, allows for medical tourism as a way for individuals to receive potentially life-saving treatments while also lowering the cost of medical expenses. The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) lays out the legal framework for medical tourism in South Carolina. According to their regulations, a patient must receive an authorized and covered service from a provider that is not in the state of South Carolina. The provider must also be approved and/or credentialed by the SCDHHS and must adhere to the standards of care for the service being provided. Once approved, the patient must also provide proof of travel to the SCDHHS and submit a valid bill for the services received. The SCDHHS will review the bill for accuracy and then determine if the services are medically necessary, as well as what the cost will be. If the service is deemed necessary, then the state will cover the cost of the service. Medical tourism is a great way for individuals to gain access to life-saving treatments that may not be available in their own state. Through the legal framework set by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, patients are able to receive these services at an affordable cost.
