What types of health insurance are available?
In California, there are various types of health insurance policies available. The most common are Private Insurance Plans, which are offered through employers or purchased on the individual market. Private plans may be provided through an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) or POS (Point-of-Service Plan). They typically cover doctor visits, hospital stays, and preventive care. Government-sponsored plans like Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) are available for people who qualify based on income and other criteria. Medicare is a federal program for individuals age 65 and older, as well as for people with certain disabilities. Medicaid is a jointly funded state and federal program for individuals with limited income and resources. CHIP provides coverage for children whose families do not qualify for Medicaid. Short-term health insurance plans are also available in California. Short-term plans are designed to provide coverage on a temporary basis, usually for up to 12 months. These plans typically include basic coverage, such as hospital and doctor visits, but they do not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, so they are not considered qualified health insurance plans. Finally, certain employers may offer health care spending accounts, such as a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account. These accounts allow employees to set aside money, pre-tax, to pay for health care expenses. Such accounts can be used for out-of-pocket medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications.
