What is the individual mandate?

The individual mandate is a requirement of Virginia’s Health Insurance Law that requires all individuals to have health insurance. It was updated in 2021 as part of the Virginia Healthcare Act. Under this law, all individuals must have health insurance that meets certain standards. These include coverage for “essential health benefits” such as hospitalization, doctor visits, prescription drugs, mental health services, and preventive care. This requirement also applies to individuals over the age of 19, as well as those under 19 who are covered by their parent’s health insurance plan. The individual mandate ensures that all individuals have adequate coverage to help pay for any medical costs that may occur. This helps to lower costs for everyone since it ensures that all individuals have coverage and prevents individuals from needing to purchase expensive individual plans. The individual mandate also helps to promote fairness and access to health care. It ensures that everyone has access to affordable health care, no matter their financial circumstances. This helps to reduce disparities in health care access and ensures that everyone has the same access to quality care. The individual mandate is a key part of Virginia’s Health Insurance Law, and it plays a critical role in ensuring all individuals have access to quality, affordable health care.
