What is the individual mandate?

The individual mandate is an important part of health insurance law in Washington. It is a requirement under state law that all individuals have health insurance coverage or face potential financial penalties. In short, it is a law that requires all citizens of Washington to have some form of health insurance. Under the individual mandate, all individuals must either purchase minimum essential health insurance coverage through a private health insurance plan or enroll in the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. Those who choose to purchase health insurance can do so through their employer, through the state-based health insurance exchange, or through a private insurance company. Individuals who choose to enroll in the Washington Health Benefit Exchange can choose from a variety of qualified health plans that provide minimum essential health benefits. Those who do not purchase health insurance or enroll in the state health insurance exchange will be subject to a tax penalty. This penalty is applied on a sliding scale and is based on household income. The individual mandate is a key component of health insurance law in Washington, and helps to ensure that all citizens have access to health insurance and care. It also helps to reduce the cost of health care by encouraging those who can afford health insurance to purchase coverage, thus spreading the costs of medical care amongst those who have insurance coverage.
