What is the difference between a lawyer and an attorney?
The terms lawyer and attorney are often used to mean the same thing, but they actually can have slightly different meanings. A lawyer is a generic term for someone who practices law, whether they are a newly licensed practitioner or a seasoned professional. An attorney, on the other hand, is a specific type of lawyer who is formally admitted to practice law in a given jurisdiction, such as the state of Washington. Attorneys must first pass the bar exam, which is an extensive test that covers a wide range of areas of the law. Attorneys must also have a certain amount of experience and must meet other criteria set by their state to become admitted to the bar. In Washington, attorneys must also be registered members of the Washington State Bar Association. This professional organization provides resources and support to attorneys in the state and sets standards of ethical and professional conduct to which all its lawyers must adhere. When looking to hire legal representation, it’s important to make sure that they are an attorney admitted to practice in the jurisdiction in which your legal matter will be resolved. Doing so can help ensure that you have an experienced, qualified legal representative who is knowledgeable and well-versed in the specific laws that apply to your case.
