What is the difference between a lawyer and a paralegal?

The main difference between a lawyer and a paralegal is their respective roles. A lawyer is an attorney who is admitted to practice law and is qualified to provide legal advice and services. Lawyers can represent individuals or businesses in a court of law, draft and interpret legislation, and provide legal advice to clients. Paralegals, on the other hand, provide legal support services to lawyers. They can be employed by law firms, businesses or other legal organizations and are responsible for researching legal documents, preparing legal documents, investigating facts, and organizing and maintaining legal files. Paralegals cannot provide legal advice or represent individuals or businesses in court. Lawyers in Washington must be licensed by the state bar association, which is the ultimate authority on the practice of law in the state. All lawyers must pass the bar exam and meet other requirements, such as having a certain amount of college-level education and experience. Paralegals are not required to be licensed by the state, but some states have certification programs for paralegals. Certification is voluntary and not mandatory. Paralegals may possess a degree from an accredited paralegal program, although a degree is not required. Additionally, paralegals may complete continuing education and training programs to stay up to date on the latest developments in their field.
