How often should HOA meetings be held?

In the state of Washington, homeowners associations (HOA) are encouraged to hold regular meetings to discuss and vote on issues related to the association. The frequency of the meetings is based on the rules and regulations of the particular HOA. Generally, monthly or quarterly meetings are recommended for small to medium-sized associations. For larger associations, bi-monthly or semi-annual meetings may be necessary. Each meeting should include a discussion of any policies or regulations that have been enacted or modified since the last meeting. Additionally, the members must be given adequate time to discuss any new proposals or issues that have been brought to the attention of the HOA board. Moreover, some HOAs choose to hold annual meetings for the entire membership. This meeting should include a review of the association’s financials and any new amendments or changes of existing rules and regulations. The board should also review the election of board members and officers as well as any new officers who were elected. In any case, it is important to ensure that the membership is fully informed of all decisions made by the HOA and that they have the opportunity to voice their opinion. Furthermore, meetings should be held at a frequency that is reasonable and that will allow the HOA to make the necessary decisions on a timely basis. That way, all members of the HOA can remain informed and remain active participants in the decision-making process.
