What is the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights?

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is an international human rights treaty developed by the United Nations to protect and promote basic human rights and freedoms. It was adopted in 1966 and came into force in 1976. The ICCPR sets out a range of fundamental civil and political rights, such as the right to life, the right not to be subjected to torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment, the right to freedom of expression, the right to participate in public affairs, and the right to a fair trial. The ICCPR is enforced by the United Nations Human Rights Committee, which investigates and monitors violations of the rights it protects. In the United States, the ICCPR is not part of federal law. However, the state of Virginia has adopted several provisions of the ICCPR to provide additional protections for its citizens. These provisions include the right to liberty and security of person, the right to freedom of expression, the right to privacy and family life, the right to an effective remedy for violations of the ICCPR, and the right to a fair trial. The adoption of these protections in the state of Virginia ensures that all citizens, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation, are protected by the same human rights standards.
