What is the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights?
The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is an international and internationally binding human rights treaty. The Covenant was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, and it is one of the two “International Covenants on Human Rights” (the other one being the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights). The Covenant is focused on the economic, social, and cultural rights. All of the rights in the Covenant are inalienable, meaning they are not subject to give up or discrimination. The office investigates and resolves complaints from individuals and organizations regarding civil rights issues, and it works to prevent and eliminate discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is an important document that provides an international framework to protect the economic and social rights of individuals. It is a crucial document for ensuring that individuals are protected from discrimination in Washington state and around the world.
