What is the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women?
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, also known as CEDAW, is an international human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. Nations which sign the treaty are bound to uphold the inherent rights of women and promote equality for women in all areas of public and private life. The CEDAW is widely seen as an important step in improving human rights law in New Mexico. The CEDAW is a comprehensive agreement which sets out broad guidelines for governments to promote and protect the rights of women around the world. The convention covers many aspects of gender equality, such as the right to non-discrimination, equal pay for equal work, and the right to have a voice in decision-making processes. It also prohibits discrimination against women in education, health care, and access to justice. In 2000, the New Mexico state Senate passed a resolution encouraging the state to ratify the CEDAW. The resolution was supported by a number of advocacy groups, including the League of Women Voters, the YWCA, and the American Association of University Women. Although the resolution did not require the state to ratify the CEDAW, it did serve to bring awareness to the important principles of the convention and to encourage governments in New Mexico to work towards a more equal society.
