What is the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international civil rights treaty that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006. The treaty seeks to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in all areas of life, including political, economic, social, cultural, and civil. The CRPD has been signed by 156 countries, including the United States, and has been in force since 2008. The convention recognizes the inherent dignity of persons with disabilities and reaffirms their right to universal civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. Specifically, the convention has 32 articles that guarantee the basic rights of persons with disabilities, such as: the right to life, liberty, and security, the right to work, the right to education, the right to a family, the right to health care, the right to physical and psychological integrity, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to access public services, and many more. In New Mexico, the CRPD has been ratified by the state legislature and is now in force in the state. All state and local government entities, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities must comply with the requirements of the CRPD. This means they must take measures to ensure that people with disabilities are provided with access to the same rights as all other citizens. They must also provide reasonable accommodations to ensure they are not discriminated against.
