What is the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights?
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is an intergovernmental organization with the core purpose of promoting and protecting human and peoples’ rights in Africa. The Commission was established in 1987 by the African Union (AU) which is a union of 55 African States. The main aim of the Commission is to ensure that African countries and their citizens are made aware of their human rights and are given the opportunity to realize those rights. The Commission is located in Banjul, The Gambia and its mandate is to ensure that all African countries, from North Africa to the south, uphold human and peoples’ rights as provided for in a number of African regional and international human rights instruments such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Commission is composed of 11 members who are elected from different African countries. The members are appointed in their individual capacity and serve for six years. They ensure that the African Union Protocols and Plans of Action on Human and Peoples’ Rights are implemented. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is important to New Mexico as it monitors, reviews, and reports on the human and peoples’ rights situations across the African continent and the progress made by African countries in the promotion of human rights. This helps to ensure that New Mexico is aware of the human rights situations across the continent and helps to shape New Mexico’s policies and initiatives in this regard.
