What international judicial institutions exist to protect human rights?
There are a number of international judicial institutions that exist to protect human rights around the world. The United Nations (UN) is the most prominent international body that works to promote human rights and justice. The UN has several specialized institutions, such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the United Nations Human Rights Council. Other important international judicial institutions include the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a permanent international court established by the Rome Statute of the ICC. Its purpose is to try individuals who are suspected of committing genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and other serious offenses against international law. The ICC is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and is composed of independent judges from around the world. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is another international judicial institution that seeks to prosecute individuals responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity, in the former nation of Yugoslavia. The ICTY has the authority to bring those responsible to justice, regardless of whether they live in the former Yugoslavia or abroad. The African Union (AU) also has an African Court of Human Rights, which was established to ensure the protection and promotion of human rights on the African continent. The court has the jurisdiction to decide cases involving human rights violations and ensure state compliance with its rulings.
