What is the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights?

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is an international agreement between multiple countries, including the United States, to protect certain civil and political rights of individuals. It was written in 1966 and entered into force in 1976. The ICCPR is divided into several articles outlining various rights. Some of these rights include freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, the right to vote, the right to an education, the right to marriage, and the right to privacy. Other articles cover the right to life, freedom from torture or cruel and unusual punishment, and protection from slavery and servitude. The United States has signed, but not yet ratified, the ICCPR.
