What is the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international treaty created by the United Nations (UN) to protect the rights of people with disabilities. It was adopted in 2006 and entered into force in 2008. The treaty was mainly aimed at protecting the rights of the disabled in areas such as access to education, health care, employment, and social services. It also protects the rights to personal autonomy and social inclusion, and to freedom from torture and inhumane treatment. Under the Convention, countries are obligated to protect the rights of people with disabilities. This includes ensuring their right to live independently, to participate in work and leisure activities, and to receive an adequate standard of living. In Michigan, the State Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) is responsible for overseeing these rights and making sure they’re respected. The Convention is important for several reasons. It encourages countries to adopt national laws that protect the rights of persons with disabilities, and it helps to maximize their potential to fully participate in society. It also encourages countries to promote cooperation between governments and non-governmental organizations in order to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
