What are the rights of refugees?

In Indiana, refugees are protected by the same rights as those of citizens. Refugees are granted the right to life, liberty, freedom from torture, and freedom from arbitrary arrest. They also have the right to seek asylum from persecution, and to practice their religious beliefs without fear of persecution. Refugees have the right to be free from fear, persecution, and discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, sex, and other protected characteristics. They have the right to seek an education, to seek employment, and to be treated equally when it comes to housing, medical care, and other public services. Refugees also have the right to receive a fair process when requesting or appealing a decision about their legal status in Indiana. They also have the right to a fair hearing in legal proceedings, including the right to an attorney and/or a translator that speaks their native language. Refugees have certain rights relating to access to documents, including the right to file for a green card, naturalization, and other documents that may help in their resettlement. They also have the right to reunite with their families and to apply for refugee resettlement without fear of retribution. Finally, refugees have the right to have their stories heard and be treated with respect.
