What are the rights of refugees?
Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their homecountry to escape persecution. They often experience displacement and are uncertain of their future. In South Carolina, refugees are protected under US and international human rights law. These laws guarantee refugees the right to seek asylum from persecution, the right to a fair hearing before an impartial court, and the right to be treated with respect and dignity. Refugees also have the right to enjoy basic human rights such as freedom of speech and of assembly, the right to work, the right to education, the right to access health care, the right to own property and the right to practice their religion. These rights are protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. In addition to these rights, refugees in South Carolina also have the right to access certain services specifically designed to meet their needs. These services include access to humanitarian assistance, legal assistance, and social services that provide special attention to the needs of vulnerable refugee populations. Refugees also have the right to access the same education and employment opportunities as non-refugees. Refugees are also entitled to the same protections against discrimination, hate speech, and other forms of violence as citizens of South Carolina and are free to express their own opinions and ideas. Refugee protection is a fundamental right, and the US is committed to protecting refugees against human rights violations.
