What is the International Court of Justice?

The International Court of Justice, or ICJ, is a branch of the United Nations (UN) responsible for resolving disputes between countries. It was established in 1945, when the UN was created, and is based in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICJ is the highest court in the world for international law, including issues related to human rights law. At the ICJ, the court hears all types of cases, including those pertaining to international human rights law. The court consists of 15 judges, who are elected to nine-year terms by the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The ICJ acts as an international court of law, allowing countries to take their disputes to court, and hear arguments from both sides in order to reach a final decision. In Oregon, the International Court of Justice is respected as the highest court in the world for international law. The Oregon Department of Justice is the official branch of the state government responsible for protecting and enforcing human rights. The Oregon Department of Justice works in cooperation with the ICJ to investigate and prosecute international or human rights cases as necessary. The Oregon Department of Justice also works with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to address violations of human rights law in the state. The ACLU is responsible for advocating for the protection of civil liberties and civil rights, including those pertaining to human rights law. The ICJ, the Oregon Department of Justice, and the ACLU all play an important role in ensuring the protection of human rights in Oregon. They work together to ensure that people’s rights are respected and that offenders are held accountable.
