What is the European Convention on Human Rights?
The European Convention on Human Rights is an international agreement between countries in Europe, setting out the rights of individuals in Europe. It was signed in 1950 with the aim of protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. This Convention is the cornerstone of the human rights protection system in Europe. The Convention protects a broad range of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to life, the right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of expression, and the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. It also protects the right to marry, the right to private and family life, and the right to property. In Texas, state law, known as the Texas Human Rights Act, also protects some of the rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights. This law prohibits discrimination in a range of areas, including employment, housing, education, and public services, on the basis of characteristics such as race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, age, and sexual orientation. In addition to the protections provided by Texas law, the European Convention on Human Rights sets out further protections for individuals. This includes the right to peaceful assembly and the right to an effective remedy if their rights are violated. Furthermore, individuals can take their cases to the European Court of Human Rights, which is the highest judicial authority for interpreting and implementing the Convention in Europe.
