What is the Convention on the Rights of the Child?
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international agreement that sets standards for the protection of children’s rights. It was adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and it is the most widely accepted international human rights treaty, with 197 countries including the United States and Texas having ratified it. The Convention recognizes that children have their own set of rights that are different from adults. These rights are designed to protect children from exploitation and mistreatment and to ensure that their best interests are taken into consideration when decisions are made. Some of the most important rights outlined in the Convention include the right to life, the right to personal liberty, the right to identity, the right to education, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to health care, and the right to protection from violence and abuse. The Convention also acknowledges the special role of parents and guardians in the care of their children and requires governments to take appropriate measures to ensure that parents and guardians are not denied their right to participate in the upbringing of their children. In addition, the Convention requires governments to take action to protect children from exploitation and exploitation-related activities, such as child labor and trafficking. In Texas, the Department of Family and Protective Services is the state agency responsible for enforcing the Convention’s principles. This agency monitors and ensures compliance with state and federal laws related to the rights of children. It also provides resources and services to children and families in order to protect and promote their rights.
