What are the rights of persons with disabilities?
In Texas, persons with disabilities are entitled to have their rights protected under the law. According to the United States Department of Justice, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides protection from discrimination based on disability. This law grants people with disabilities the right to access public spaces, such as stores, restaurants, and theaters, and to receive services from them. This includes the right to be accompanied by a service animal when necessary. It also requires employers to provide reasonable modifications to the workplace environment to accommodate disabilities, so that individuals with disabilities can perform their jobs. The ADA also requires state government buildings, programs, and services to be accessible for individuals with disabilities. This includes providing accessible parking, making sure that hallways are wide enough, putting in ramps, and providing good lighting and signage. It also requires that accessible communication methods be provided, such as telecommunication devices, assistive listening devices, and computer captioning services. Lastly, the ADA requires that people with disabilities be given the same opportunities to participate in programs or activities by providing reasonable modifications or services to help ensure their equal access. For example, an organization may have to provide sign language interpreters or assistance with paperwork in order to make their services available to individuals with disabilities. These are just a few of the rights of persons with disabilities in Texas, as protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is important that individuals with disabilities know their rights, and that they are aware of the accommodations available to them.
