What are the rights of refugees?
In Texas, refugees are people who have fled their homeland because of a fear of persecution, war, or natural disaster. According to state and federal human rights laws, refugees have the right to life, liberty, and security of person, freedom from torture, the right not to be subjected to degrading treatment, and a right to a fair and public hearing. They also have the right to protection from arbitrary arrest and detention, the right to seek asylum, and the right to equal protection before the law. They also have the right to receive necessary medical care and assistance, to receive education, and to be provided for in the event of disability, illness, or old age. Additionally, refugees have the right to work, the right to form and be a part of associations, and the right to property. Finally, refugees have the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of movement, freedom of opinion, and freedom of religion, as well as the right to leave their country of origin. These rights ensure that refugees can live with dignity while receiving the assistance they need to establish a safe and healthy life.
