What is human rights law?
Human rights law is a type of law which sets out the rights of people in a given state or region, and how those rights are protected. In Texas, human rights law is established by the Texas State Constitution, federal law, and the laws of other states. The Texas State Constitution outlines the basic rights of all citizens, including the right to freedom of speech, the right to vote, and the right to religious freedom. Texas has also adopted a number of federal laws which relate to human rights issues, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. State laws in Texas can also help protect human rights, such as the Texas Equal Pay Act of 1985, which prohibits employers from discriminating against employees based on sex. In addition, human rights law in Texas also applies to certain issues such as adoption and marriage. The Texas Family Code ensures that all individuals, regardless of gender, are allowed to marry and adopt children. It also guarantees equal rights for same-sex couples who choose to marry, and also prohibits discrimination against couples who choose to have a civil union. Finally, it is important to note that human rights law in Texas also applies to issues such as immigration, reproductive rights, and employment. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that immigrants have the right to due process and to be free from discrimination based on their immigration status. In addition, the Texas State Constitution guarantees the right to reproductive freedom and access to reproductive health. Finally, Texas law protects employees from discrimination on the basis of race, gender, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.
