What are the International Human Rights Standards?
The International Human Rights Standards are a set of rights that all humans should have. These basic rights are derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was drafted by the United Nations and adopted by representatives of countries worldwide in 1948. The standards set out in the Declaration represent a consensus on the rights and freedoms that all people should possess, regardless of their race, sexuality, religion, or other identity. The International Human Rights Standards include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, the right to be treated equally regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, and other social identities, the right to a fair trial, the right to an education, the right to work, and the right to have access to healthcare. They also include the right to vote, the right to own property, the right to privacy, and the right to practice one’s culture and religion. In Texas, these International Human Rights Standards are supported by a number of laws and organizations. The Texas Legislature is committed to protecting human rights, and the Texas Department of Justice promotes the ideals set out in the Declaration. A number of organizations like the Texas Civil Rights Project, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Texas Freedom Network are also dedicated to ensuring that the International Human Rights Standards are respected in Texas.
