Can an insurance company deny a claim?

Yes, an insurance company can deny a claim in the state of Washington. A claim can be denied for a variety of reasons, such as an insurance company’s determination that the policyholder did not meet certain policy requirements, the policyholder’s failure to notify the insurance company of a new risk, or the policyholder’s failure to provide sufficient information for the insurance company to make a decision about the claim. Additionally, insurance companies may deny a claim if they believe the claim to be fraudulent. Insurance companies also have the right to deny claims if the damages claimed exceed the maximum liability limits of the policy. In Washington, policyholders have the right to appeal any claim that is denied. In order to do so, policyholders must first file a written complaint with their insurance company. If the insurance company does not respond to the complaint, policyholders may take their claim to the state’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner. The Office of the Insurance Commissioner has the authority to investigate and settle disputes between policyholders and insurance companies.
