How do I know if an insurance claim has been settled?

In Mississippi, when an insurance claim has been settled there will usually be a written agreement between you, the insurance company, and the other party involved. This agreement is referred to as a Release of All Claims. It states that all parties agree on the amount of the settlement and that the claimant will not pursue further legal action related to the claim. You may also receive a check from the insurance company, or sometimes a check directly from the other party involved. The check will usually list both your name and the insurance company’s name when distributed by the insurer. Your insurance company may also send you a copy of the claim form and a letter of explanation that outlines what the settlement will cover. This will document the claim and explain what you will receive from the settlement. Once you have received the release of all claims, any checks distributed, and documentation from the insurance company, you can be reasonably sure that the insurance claim has been settled. If you have not received any of the documents above or a payment, you should contact your insurance company or the other party involved to check on the status of the claim. It is important to follow-up and make sure that the claim has been closed and settled before continuing to pursue the matter.
