How do I know if an insurance claim has been settled?
In North Carolina, there are specific laws that govern how insurance companies must process and settle claims. Generally, insurance companies must process a claim within the reasonable time frame allowed by the state’s insurance laws. In North Carolina, insurance companies must provide the insured with a written notice of the claim’s status within sixty days after the receipt of an insurance claim. This written notice will inform the insured as to whether the claim has been accepted by the insurance company, is being investigated, or has been rejected. Once the claim has been accepted by the insurance company, it must also provide a written notice of the settlement amount to the insured. The notice of settlement will include an explanation of the amount that has been accepted by the insurance company and the payments that will be made to the insured. If the insurance company rejects a claim, it must provide a written notice to the insured with the reasons for the rejection. The notice should also provide the insured with the option to appeal the decision if they disagree. Additionally, the insured can contact the North Carolina Department of Insurance for assistance. The Department of Insurance can help with questions regarding an insurance claim and can provide additional information on filing a complaint.
