What is an insurance policy endorsement?
An insurance policy endorsement is an addition to an insurance policy that modifies or adds coverage to a policy. Endorsements are used to customize insurance policies to fit the individual needs of a policyholder. In Arizona, endorsements are most commonly used in property and casualty insurance policies such as homeowner’s insurance. Endorsements are also used for automobile or health insurance policies. An endorsement is added to an existing policy and can be used to modify or expand coverage, delete coverage, add an exclusion or otherwise change or add to the policy’s terms. Endorsements may be added to the policy at the time of purchase or later on at the request of the policyholder. Some common examples of endorsements include endorsements that change the amount of coverage, add or remove coverage for certain risks, or provide additional coverage for special situations. When an endorsement is added to an existing policy, the policyholder must understand the risk associated with the additional coverage and the circumstances needed to trigger the coverage. Insurance policy endorsements are important, as they can provide policyholders with the specific coverage they need for their unique situation.
