What is a power of attorney?

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that grants someone else the authority to act on your behalf, typically in matters related to insurance claims. In California, a POA is a written authorization, signed by you and witnessed by someone else, that allows a person who you trust to make decisions on your behalf related to insurance claims and other legal matters. The person you grant the POA is known as your "agent," and is also referred to as an "attorney-in-fact." Your agent can help you with filing your insurance claims, speaking with insurance companies, and settling disputes. They are also allowed to sign documents, make payments on your behalf, and access your medical records and other information. You can revoke your POA at any time, as long as you are of sound mind. However, it is important to remember that when you grant a person the power of attorney, you are trusting them to act in your best interests. Make sure you talk to your potential agent beforehand to ensure they understand your wishes.
