What is an Investment Fraud Law Suit?
An investment fraud law suit is a type of legal action taken against someone accused of committing fraud involving investments. In Washington state, this type of fraud is regulated by the Washington Securities Act of 1971. This Act makes it illegal to manipulate the stock market or to use deceptive practices to mislead someone about the value of an investment. Investment fraud law suits are typically brought by an individual claiming to have been a victim of financial fraud or by the state of Washington itself. To prove an investment fraud case, a plaintiff must show that the defendant made false statements or omitted important facts which led to the plaintiff suffering a financial loss. If the plaintiff is successful in proving they have been defrauded, they may be entitled to damages. The court may also order the defendant to pay restitution and/or civil penalties. Restitution is a form of compensation which must be paid to the plaintiff by the defendant in order to make up for the loses suffered. Civil penalties, on the other hand, are intended to punish the defendant for their actions and can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on the specifics of the case. Investment fraud law suits can be complicated, so it is important to seek professional legal advice from an experienced attorney in order to determine the best course of action.
