What is asylum?
Asylum is a type of legal protection that allows an individual to remain in the United States if they are fleeing persecution in their home country. This protection can be granted to individuals who have been threatened with serious harm, including violence and torture. In order to receive asylum, an individual must establish that their home country is unable or unwilling to protect them from harm. In South Carolina, individuals can apply for asylum by submitting an application with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The application must include the individual’s birth certificate, passport, and other documents that can prove their identity, as well as documents that can demonstrate the individual is facing persecution in their home country. Once an application is submitted, an individual will receive a decision on their asylum request from the asylum office in the US. If the individual is approved for asylum, they will receive temporary work authorization and may eventually become a legal permanent resident. Asylum is an important tool for individuals who are seeking safety and security in the United States. It can be a way for individuals to escape persecution and live without fear of harm.
