How do I apply for asylum?

In Vermont, applying for asylum can be done either at the border or inside the US. If you are applying for asylum at the border, contact a US immigration official at the port of entry and explain that you wish to apply for asylum. You will be interviewed by an asylum officer and asked to prove that you have a well-founded fear of persecution in your home country. If you are applying for asylum within the US, you must file an application with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To do this, fill out a Form I-589, Application for Asylum and Withholding of Removal. Along with the form, include a detailed statement of your reason(s) for seeking asylum. Also include supporting documents such as evidence of your identity, evidence of any persecution or fear of persecution you have experienced, and any supporting documentation about your nationality or country conditions. Once your application is received, you may be scheduled for an interview with an asylum officer. During the interview, be prepared to answer questions about your application, and present any evidence that supports your claim. After the interview, USCIS will make a decision about your eligibility for asylum. If your application is denied, you may be placed in removal proceedings. However, you may still be eligible for withholding of removal or relief under the Convention Against Torture (CAT).
