What is a “credible fear” interview?

A credible fear interview is an important part of the asylum seeking process in Virginia. It is used to determine if an individual seeking asylum has a reasonable fear of persecution on account of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of social group. This interview is conducted by an asylum officer, who will assess the applicant’s story and determine if their fear is credible. The officer will ask questions about the asylum seeker’s background and current situation, as well as the facts that support the fear of persecution. Based on the information gathered during the interview, the officer will rule either that the fear is credible or that it is not credible. If the fear is deemed credible, the applicant will be allowed to submit additional evidence and may be granted asylum in the United States. On the other hand, if the fear is not credible, the applicant might face deportation and must present a strong case at a hearing before a judge in order to be granted asylum.
