What happens if my application for asylum is accepted?
If your application for asylum is accepted in New Hampshire, you will be allowed to remain in the United States and given the opportunity to apply for a green card. This will give you permanent residence in the U.S. and the ability to work and live in the country. As a refugee, you will also be eligible for some government benefits and services, such as health insurance, housing assistance, and food stamps. You may also choose to go to school or pursue higher education. Additionally, you will be allowed to travel freely in and out of the U.S. with special permission from the government. Your asylum status will need to be renewed every year until you become a permanent resident. You will need to prove that your circumstances and situation are still the same as when you applied for asylum. You may also need to pass a security check and attend an in-person interview with an immigration judge. After passing the security check and the judge’s interview, as well as any other required steps for renewal, you should receive a permanent green card. At this point, you will have full access to all rights and privileges of a U.S. citizen, including the ability to apply for U.S. citizenship. This process can take several years, but will ultimately allow you to live freely and permanently in the United States.
