What is the “material support bar”?

The “material support bar” is a rule under U.S. immigration law that applies to people who are applying for asylum in California. It is a restriction that may prevent some people from qualifying for asylum in the U.S. Under the material support bar, an applicant may be denied asylum if they provided what is defined as “material support” to a terrorist organization. This means that an applicant must prove that they didn’t provide any type of assistance or aid, even if it was involuntary, to any terrorist organization. This can include something as simple as a donation of money or goods. In California, people who have provided material support in the past can still apply for asylum, but they must prove that the material support was provided “under duress” or was “limited” and not for terrorist activities. The government will review applications on a case-by-case basis and determine if an applicant meets the guidelines for a waiver of the material support bar. Not everyone applying for asylum in California will be subject to the material support bar. However, it is something that all applicants should be aware of and understand before applying, in order to ensure that they comply with all of the requirements.
