What is the role of an asylum officer?

An asylum officer is responsible for ensuring that refugees and other applicants of asylum in Virginia are eligible for international protection and resettlement into the United States. The role of an asylum officer includes conducting interviews with applicants, reviewing their documentation and other evidence of their claims, and making a decision about their case. The process starts with the applicant submitting an application for asylum detailing their circumstances and why they are seeking safety in the United States. An asylum officer will then schedule an appointment with the applicant to review their application in detail. This is where the officer will ask the applicant questions in order to better understand why they are seeking asylum and to verify the information in the application. The asylum officer will then verify the applicant’s identity and any documents provided to support their claim. In some cases, the officer may also request additional information or documents from the applicant during the interview. After the review, the officer will render a decision about whether the applicant meets the criteria for asylum in Virginia. If successful, the applicant will be offered asylum and can then apply for permanent resident status. If unsuccessful, the applicant will receive a removal order to return to their home country. In either outcome, the decision of the asylum officer will be considered final and can only be appealed in a court of law.
