How can I obtain a refugee visa?

In order to obtain a refugee visa in California, you must meet certain qualifications and follow specific steps as outlined by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). Generally speaking, you must demonstrate that you are unable or unwilling to return to your home country due to persecution, fear of persecution, or a well-founded fear of persecution based on your race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. The first step in obtaining a refugee visa is to complete the appropriate form, which is usually Form I-590. You will then need to provide evidence of your claim, such as documentation of police reports or other forms of evidence that demonstrate your fear of persecution. This evidence must be sent to the Refugee Processing Center for review. Once your application has been submitted, you will be interviewed by a USCIS officer who will determine whether or not you meet the requirements for asylum. During the interview, the officer will ask questions about your claim and review your evidence. If the officer determines that you are eligible for an asylum visa, you will be issued a travel document and a valid refugee visa. Once you have received your refugee visa, you may apply for a green card and other forms of permanent residence in the United States. Note that only refugees who have been granted a refugee visa may apply for a green card in California.
