How long does it take to get a work permit after getting asylum?

In California, the amount of time to receive a work permit after receiving asylum may vary. Generally, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may begin processing an application for a work permit approximately 150 days after asylum is granted. During that time, the USCIS will review the applicant’s application and decide if the applicant is eligible for a work permit. If the USCIS approves the work permit application, the applicant will be sent a document called an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). This document typically arrives within 90 days of approval. Then, the applicant can take the EAD to the Social Security Administration (SSA), where they can apply for a Social Security number. Once the applicant has the Social Security number, the applicant can apply for a state-issued ID card and can apply for work. Therefore, it is possible to receive a work permit and begin working in California after the applicant has been granted asylum. However, the exact amount of time required to get the work permit depends on the processing time of the USCIS and the SSA.
