Are there restrictions on travel outside the U.S. after being granted asylum?
Yes, there are restrictions on travel outside of the U.S. after being granted asylum in Washington. According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), persons granted asylum may be able to travel outside of the country but must be careful to not stay outside for longer than one year. If a person stays abroad for more than one year, their asylum status may be terminated and they might not be allowed to return to the United States. In addition, persons granted asylum must have advance permission from USCIS before leaving the United States, called Advance Parole. This document allows a person to return to the U.S. and will eventually become a Re-entry Permit if the person leaves for more than one year. Without advance permission, a person may not be allowed back into the United States. In Washington, a person granted asylum may be allowed to apply for a permanent resident status one year after being granted asylum. However, this individual must be careful not to travel abroad without advance permission and must be mindful of the one-year limit. If they exceed the limit, they may lose their asylum status and not be allowed to return to the United States.
