What is the Visa Waiver Program?
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is an international agreement that allows visitors to travel to the United States for business or pleasure without needing to obtain a visa. It is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and its purpose is to facilitate international travel to and from the United States. Under the VWP, citizens of certain participating countries can come to the United States for up to 90 days without applying for a visa. The program is designed to foster strong economic connections between the United States and those countries. Eligibility for the VWP is based on security criteria, such as low rates of visa refusal and reliable travel documentation. To qualify for the VWP, travelers must have a valid passport, be from one of the participating countries, have a round-trip ticket, and have no criminal record or history of serious immigration violations. Additionally, travelers must present approved documentation upon arrival in the United States. In Washington, the VWP is managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Visitors entering the United States under the VWP are subject to inspection at ports of entry, and must present proper documentation to gain entry. All travelers entering the U.S. are reminded to arrive with valid passports and proper documentation to ensure a smooth entry.
