Does a child need a sponsor to apply for immigration?

In most cases, a child in Washington does need a sponsor to apply for immigration. A sponsor is defined as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR) who undertakes legal responsibility for financially supporting an immigrant during the immigration process and for a certain period of time after the immigrant becomes a U.S. resident. The sponsor is usually someone close to the immigrant, such as a family member, friend, or employer. In the case of a child, the sponsor must provide proof that they have enough income to support the child and any other dependents. The child must have their own paperwork, including birth certificate, passport and evidence of their relationship to the sponsor if they have one, as well as evidence of their current country of residence. In some cases, a child may not need a sponsor. For example, a child may be eligible to apply for a special visa if they are an orphan, or a relative may choose to apply for a visa on the child’s behalf. Additionally, a child may be eligible for asylum or other forms of special protection if they meet specific criteria. In any case, the sponsor’s income must meet the federal poverty guideline in order for the child to be eligible to apply for immigration. The sponsor will also be responsible for providing financial support for the child, unless the child has his or her own form of financial support. Finally, both the sponsor and the child are required to provide accurate information on their respective immigration forms.
