What is a Reentry Permit?
A Reentry Permit is a document that allows an individual to re-enter the United States after previously having been deported from the country. This permit is issued by United States Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS) and is valid for two years. This permit allows a person to travel outside the United States, while still maintaining their status as a legal resident. In Washington State, a person who has been deported and wish to return to the United States must obtain a Reentry Permit. This permit must be obtained before the individual is allowed to return to the United States and must be acquired BEFORE the person leaves the United States. The permit must be purchased from USCIS and is non-refundable. The Reentry Permit can be applied for in person, via mail, or online. There is a fee for the application and it must be accompanied with evidence of the individual’s current legal status in the United States, proof of identity, and any other documentation requested by USCIS. The processing time for a Reentry Permit can vary and once approved the permit must be used within six months of the issue date. In addition, a Reentry Permit may be revoked at any time, if the holder fails to comply with any laws of the United States, or if the holder has committed any criminal activities in the United States. This can result in the individual being deported again, or facing further criminal proceedings. Therefore, it is important for anyone who has been deported and wishes to return to the United States to make sure they obtain the necessary Reentry Permit before re-entering the country.
