What is an Order of Supervision?

An Order of Supervision is a type of release from detention granted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to individuals with pending deportation proceedings in Washington. The order requires them to regularly report to an ICE agent, comply with a curfew, or stay within a certain area while they remain in the United States. The purpose of an Order of Supervision is to ensure that those facing deportation in Washington comply with the conditions of their release and show up for their court appointments. It also prevents them from leaving the jurisdiction without permission. If the person fails to comply with the order, they may be detained again or removed from the country. An Order of Supervision can also be used as an alternative to detention to relieve overcrowding in detention facilities. It is a way to allow individuals the opportunity to remain in the United States while their case is being decided by an immigration judge. The length of time that an Order of Supervision is in effect depends on the individual’s case and the location. Generally, the order will remain in effect until the individual’s case is decided or they are deported. While the order is in effect, the person must adhere to the conditions required by ICE or risk detention or deportation.
