What is the difference between an immigration judge and an immigration officer?
An immigration judge and an immigration officer are both professionals who work within the immigration law system. However, their roles are very different from one another. An immigration judge is an independent official who presides over and oversees the legal proceedings for cases that involve possible deportations or other immigration issues. Immigration judges are responsible for determining whether an individual should be deported or can stay in the United States based on the evidence presented in the case. Immigration judges are appointed by the United States Department of Justice and participate in hearings, review legal documents, and conduct interviews. An immigration officer is in charge of enforcing immigration laws. Immigration officers are employed by the United States government and are responsible for conducting investigations into possible violations of those laws. They can recommend that an individual be removed from the United States or allow an individual to remain in the United States in certain circumstances. Immigration officers do not have the authority to make legal decisions; they are only responsible for providing recommendations based on their investigations. In summary, while an immigration judge is responsible for making decisions on whether someone should be deported or not, an immigration officer is responsible for enforcing immigration laws and making recommendations based on their investigations.
