What is the Department of Homeland Security?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a federal government agency responsible for the security of U.S. citizens and visitors. DHS was created in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and is tasked with combating terrorism, border security, immigration, cybersecurity, infrastructure protection, and disaster prevention and management. The Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is part of the DHS and is responsible for enforcing federal immigration law. This includes detaining and deporting individuals who violate immigration laws. In the state of Florida, ICE works closely with local and state law enforcement to identify and remove those individuals who are in the country illegally or are not in compliance with immigration laws. ICE also investigates employers suspected of hiring undocumented immigrants and those who illegally smuggle or enable people to enter the United States. Their mission is "to protect America and uphold public safety by enforcing immigration laws and safeguarding our borders."
