What is an ICE raid?

An ICE raid is an operation conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. An ICE raid is a targeted enforcement action in which ICE agents search for, apprehend or deport people who are in the country illegally. A raid can involve multiple agents and law-enforcement officers, and typically targets a particular location, such as a business or home. ICE agents carry out immigration raids to arrest and deport individuals who have no legal right to remain in the country. In North Carolina, ICE agents often target areas where large numbers of undocumented immigrants are believed to be living, working, or attending school. ICE raids can result in the detention, arrest and deportation of anyone who is found to be in the country illegally, regardless of their immigration status. ICE raids can occur without warning, often at very early hours of the morning. Agents usually arrive with an immigration warrant signed by a judge. During the raids, agents may search homes and businesses, and question people to determine their immigration status. Agents also have the authority to detain anyone who is believed to be living in the United States illegally for further questioning. ICE raids can be traumatic for those involved, and have been criticized by some for their aggressive approach to enforcement. The use of ICE raids as an enforcement tool is controversial, and subject to ongoing debate in the United States.
