What is an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is a document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that permits a non-citizen living in the United States to legally work. The document is also known as a Work Permit or an Employment Authorization Card. The USCIS grants the EAD to foreign citizens and nationals who are authorized to work in the U.S. for a specific period of time and for a specific purpose. Depending on their situation, the foreign citizen may need to renew their EAD periodically. In Pennsylvania, EADs are an important immigration law requirement for those who are subject to deportation. The USCIS will not deport a non-citizen if they can prove that they have valid legal work authorization. Without an EAD or other valid proof of employment authorization, even individuals with valid immigration documentation could face deportation proceedings. EADs are issued to non-citizens with a variety of immigration statuses, including those who are in the country on a temporary visa, Asylum seekers, refugees, or people who have applied for permanent residence. To obtain an EAD, the individual must fill out an application and submit proof of their immigration status. The EAD can then be used to work in the U.S. and must be renewed every year or two, depending on the type of employment authorization.
